The pirates of Shodid Cove are a small, but growing, fleet of pirate ships that raid, capture and cause havoc among the Elvish trade routes on the Western Sea. Governed by a republic, the mish-mash conglomeration of ships defies the attempts of other nations to destroy them by virtue of their decentralized nature. Made up of escaped orcish slaves, elves opposed to their people’s imperialistic actions, humans in need of refuge or employment, or halflings searching for either their mythic homeland or a community outside of their own people[, these pirates defy the society that so seeks their destruction].
The Pirate Council, the decision making body of the fleet, consists of the captains of all of the ships in the fleet. Each captain is elected by the crew of their ship, and change captains whenever they see fit. The Council is chaired by the president, captain of “The Secretarybird,” who is often referred to as one of the “Queens of Pirates” by those unaware of the Cove’s democratic nature. The other “queen” is the captain of “The Accipiter,” the Secretarybird’s sister ship, who is the president’s lover.
Despite the title given to her by outsiders, the Accipiter’s captain is not the vice-president of the Fleet; the elected vice-president is Maximus, a horse that was magically granted sentience and the ability to speak and read humanoid languages.
