A tropical island chain far off the eastern coast of the largest continent, filled with unusual flora and even stranger fauna, is home to a race known to the outside world as orcs. Their name is a misnomer; the humans who landed on on of their islands asked them what they were called, and thought that the phrase “or kheever” was their name, when in fact it was a description of their visitors, meaning “pale-skin.” Many rumors about the orcs depict them as savages, beastly people who attack anyone on sight, having little regard for anyone weaker than them. Nothing could be further from the truth; Ezmai culture is, for the most part, peaceful. Each of the islands is home to a different tribe or handful of tribes, and while each of these tribes has a different culture, they interact freely and as friends. They live as nomads, raising domesticated animals, or as hunter gatherers, as human agriculture could not be implemented on the islands due to a lack of nutrients in the land. Instead, the more lush islands are home to permacultures, food-producing forests maintained by druids that are largely self-sustaining, and used to feed the population of all of the islands.
The origin of the harsh rumors stem from the first encounter between sea-faring humans and the inhabitants of Ezmai. Initially greeted with open arms, the humans took advantage of the orcs, enslaving and murdering them for sport. However, the orcs quickly retaliated violently, and repelled the initial human invaders, as well as any vessels carrying more humans who tried to land. Decades of conflict have made the orcs distrustful of other humanoids, and has made other humanoids distrustful of orcs.
